Why A Glass Filter Will Save You Big Time
I swore this would be the last time I would sell a sand filter for a high-end pool.
The homeowner called me in a panic.
“My pool filter media is old, and they’re telling me it’s gonna cost around $500 to fix. What should I do?”
This was a client of mine from years ago.
At the time, he opted for the standard sand filter over the glass filtration system.
“$500 extra for a filter that does basically the same thing as this one?” he asked incredulously.
“I’ll pass, I’ll just be sure to clean and replace it as recommended.”
Except he didn’t.
And now just 3 years later it’s costing him another $500 to fix his pool.
Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with these standard filters.
If you take the time to clean them properly and replace them periodically, they’ll do almost as good a job as the glass filter.
But here’s the thing…
People get a pool in their backyard to RELAX.
NOT to spend time cleaning and maintaining it.
Especially when it has a recurring $500 price tag.
So when I used to give my clients the option of having a sand filter or glass filtration system, many opted for the sand filter.
“Sure, I’ve heard of friends who’s pools need costly repairs. But that won’t happen to me!”
...says everyone before they got hit with expensive repair bills because their filter failed them.
So finally I just said no more.
I’m not even going to give you the option of a sand filter knowing how superior a glass filtration system is.
This is why I’m offering a glass filtration upgrade ($1,000 value) free to all the pools I build in 2020.
I don’t even want to offer the sand filtration system anymore and I’ll happily eat the cost of the glass filter because it’s just that much better for pool owners.
Not only does a glass filter last 3-4 times longer than a sand filter, but it is also far more capable of cleaning everything that goes into your pool.
Which gives you cleaner, clearer water that requires less maintenance.
Glass filters last an average of 15-20 years where sand lasts 3-5.
So the cost breakdown over a 20 year period would look something like $950 for glass over 20 years versus $3500 over 20 years for sand.
Additionally, if the filter is turned off or the pool is green for as little as 2 weeks, algae can imbed in the sand and the only way to get it out is to change the sand.
I won’t get into the details of what that’s like, but anyone who’s ever changed a sand filter filled with algae knows it’s kinda gross.
With glass, you just shock and go. Way easier and less expensive.
The glass system can filter down to 5-10 microns, which is even finer than cartridge filters.
You’re literally filtering out bacteria at that level.
A sand system only filters down to 30 microns.
This means that a glass system filters out material that is 3-6 times smaller than the sand system.
That’s a huge difference!
Imagine a 1 car garage where only 1 car can get in.
Now imagine a 6 car garage and how much larger that would be.
You could go from fitting a mid-size sedan to fitting an 18 wheel tractor-trailer.
When it comes to your pool, I’d rather see a sedan pass through your filter than a massive truck.
